A little about ourselves |
The Nelson Transport Strategy Group (NELSUST) Inc. is an incorporated society with a wide transport vision for the good of the whole region. We have been working on getting enticing transport options to car commuting. We don't aim to force people out of cars, just give them attractive options to do something better for the city and the planet than car commuting. We are pushing for a city for people, a vibrant Nelson, not a city choked with cars.
In 2004 we were one of 3 bodies that took what was then Transit and the Nelson City Council to the Environment Court over the Southern Link Arterial road. And we won. The court ruled the route as being "fundamentally the wrong place for a state highway".
We have been working hard on providing alternatives so roading expansion is not needed and at the same time improving Rocks Road and Tahunanui. Improving these ares without sending the trucks through Nelson South, VIctory and the city, the long way round to get to the port. We have developed the log barging proposal to get 35,000 of the most intimidating trucks off Rocks Rd, Tahunaui Drive and out of Richmond too each year. And at zero cost, reducing double handling and free up valuable port land. (link on previous page)
We have worked hard on solutions to providing an appealing wide shared path around the seaward side of parked cars around Rocks Road. We are helping develop cycling links through Tahunanui and pushed for them to extend right to the Nayland schools.
And we've advocated for Express buses starting from Wakefield and Motueka running on clearway lanes to complement the existing Nbus system. We successfully advocated for a summer beach bus between the city and Tahuna beach, and are pushing for it to be extended to the airport so people have a more appealing option than driving and clogging the road.
